How To Build A Grill Out Of A 55 Gallon Drum (Side)
Earlier I posted how to build a grill out of a 55 gallon drum. However, it was just instructions on how to do an upright one. Today I decided to post directions on how to do it if it was sitting sideways. You still need the same materials and tools in the earlier post, minus one handle. The only other things you should need is 2 hinges for the lid.
- Carefully cut the drum in half. It’s probably a good idea to have someone give you a hand with this, and make sure you’re using ear and eye protection.
- Now attach the new “lid” with the hinges you bought.
- Cut about a 2″ hole in the new lid for ventilation.
- Cut a smaller hole, about 1 -1/2″ on the side of lower half of the drum, about 2″ up from bottom for the other vent. I would recommend covering it with a round metal “flap” secured by a screw, so you can control the air flow.
- Measure the lower bottom half of grill. This is where you will put your grate for the coals.
- Measure about 1″ below top part of bottom half of grill. This will be for your actual grill for cooking. You will need to weld a series of small angle irons on the inside, so they grill has somewhere to rest on.
- As for the stand, I would recommend getting some square tubing, and either being somewhat creative or having someone build it for you, depending on your welding experience.
- If you really want to get creative, you can install a round thermometer/gauge in the top.
